Holy Cross

The first for dreams

Our Curriculum

Curriculum Intent Statement

The curriculum at Holy Cross has been designed to enable every child to grow spiritually and emotionally; fostering their imagination and engendering a deep sense of personal identity and self-worth. Throughout the curriculum, pupils will be supported to acquire the personal skills and qualities that will take them beyond the classroom and prepare them to be great citizens.

We need our curriculum to instil a love of learning in all our pupils; a curriculum that is relevant and engaging, yet ambitious. The curriculum at Holy Cross, not only incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014, but also focuses heavily on pupils’ wellbeing and ability to self-regulate, providing many opportunities for pupils to learn outside the classroom. We see this as the key to unlocking pupils’ full potential so that they are enabled to achieve their future dreams and be successful in life. “Share your plans with the Lord, and you will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3).

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, we use Read Write Inc to support children as they learn to read and write. This scheme uses rhymes and phrases to help children remember new phonemes and graphemes as they are taught. We send home phonetically decodable books for children to practise their segmenting and blending with parents and carers. Please see the video below to listen to how we say our sounds.

For this academic year, 2019/20, we are following Cycle A. As we have now completed the full 2-year curriculum cycle, school staff are revisiting, evaluating and improving the curriculum to ensure full coverage and a good match of topics to pupils’ interests.
